Our Story

We are creators and promoters of craft spirits based in Angus, Scotland. Angus is a region rich in history, heritage, and culture, with some of Scotland's most breathtaking scenery. Our region inspires us daily; the lush landscape, stunning beaches, and incredible sunrises and sunsets all ignite our imagination and fuel our creativity. We began our journey in 2017. Inspired by a walk in the Angus hills and the botanicals we encountered, particularly the wild thistles, it laid the groundwork for the founding of our distillery and the creation of our first spirits. Today, our team of experienced people bring over twenty-five years of knowledge in the production, maturation, and bottling of Scotch whisky, gin, vodka, and rum to craft spirits we hope you'll enjoy!

Our Location

We are located just outside the town of Brechin (pronounced BREE-kin). Brechin is a former Royal burgh and, although it has been described as a city at times because of its magnificent medieval cathedral dating back to the 13th century and a round tower even older, from around 1000 AD. Lots of history! Our site houses our distillery, cask bond, and bottling operation, with a shop coming soon. Our distillery features two pot stills flanked by two plate columns, allowing us to produce refined, smooth, and, in our opinion, very drinkable spirits. Currently, we do not offer tours, but we are working on making them available in the future.

Our Philosophy

We love what we do, and why we do it is to make every day as exciting, educational, and varied as possible. Whether it's our team at Black Thistle or the people we meet out and about, sharing stories, knowledge, and experiences, these exchanges matter to us. So, we hope that every time you enjoy a sip of Black Thistle gin, vodka, or rum, or chat with us at an event, it leaves a happy impression.
